HC Deb 11 November 1947 vol 444 cc48-9W
76. Mr. Bower

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he is aware that an American cookery book, entitled "The Cookie Book," containing many recipes which cannot be employed in this country, is at present on sale at various bookstalls; and whether, in view of the need to save dollars, he will give an undertaking that imports of such books will no longer be permitted.

Mr. Belcher

No doubt the book referred to by the hon. Member was imported while the Open General Licence for the import of books was in force. This licence was revoked on 12th September, and in its place importers are now licensed to import certain classes of books up to a fixed total value. Learned, scientific and technical books are included, but I doubt whether this particular book would be imported under such a licence.
