HC Deb 10 November 1947 vol 444 cc19-20W
124. Mrs. Mann

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he is aware that thousands of German motorists within the British zone are joyriding on petrol sacrificed by British motorists to save dollars; that hundreds of German vehicles congregate for boxing tournaments, picnics, and parties; that their owners register the cars as taxis thus escaping the regulations in respect of petrol; and if he will take immediate steps to put an end to this state of affairs.

Mr. Mayhew

I am not aware that the motor vehicle regulations are being violated on the scale alleged by my hon. Friend. A new and stringent law has just been passed further restricting the use of motor vehicles and we are constantly seeking to enforce the strictest economy in the use of petrol by all concerned, British and German.
