HC Deb 10 November 1947 vol 444 cc20-1W
Lieut.-Colonel Bromley-Davenport

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether, in view of the decision to abolish visas between Great Britain and Italy, and to negotiate a convention to provide for increased cultural exchanges, he can make an early statement indicating to what degree travel restrictions between the two countries will be reduced in this connection.

Mr. Mayhew

Negotiations have begun for the conclusion of an agreement for the reciprocal abolition of visas for British subjects travelling to Italy and Italian citizens travelling to the United Kingdom, and negotiations have also begun for the conclusion of a cultural convention with Italy. With regard to provision of foreign exchange for pleasure travel outside the sterling area, I would refer the hon. Member to the replies given by my right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer to the hon. Members for West Leicester (Mr. Janner) and South Blackpool (Wing-Commander Robinson) on 28th October and 4th November.
