§ Mr. EdeI am concerned with vehicles of these types only when they are used to carry petroleum spirit on the public roads. During the war an Order was made by my predecessor permitting the use by the Petroleum Board of vehicles of type 0854 for carrying petroleum spirit. This Order is still in force, but as at present advised I do not propose to extend it to vehicles other than those operated by the Board.

As surplus vehicles may not be immediately roadworthy or may be of special design, all purchasers at auctions are required to give a signed undertaking not to use the vehicle on the road until it complies with the Acts and regulations relating to construction, equipment and use.

§ Mr. BarnesMy right hon. Friend the Minister of Supply has indicated the conditions under which ex-Service vehicles are sold by his Department. I cannot undertake to advise hauliers how they should modify particular types of vehicles such as those mentioned so that they may lawfully be used on roads. It is an offence to use vehicles on the roads which do not comply with the requirements of the Construction and Use Regulations
