Mr. Garry Allighanasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many police officers were on duty in and around the approaches to the Royal Albert Hall on Tuesday, 18th March, on the occasion of the Anderson-Phillips fight; whether he is aware that the decision under British Board of Boxing Control rules caused a public demonstration at the end of that fight; and if he will warn the board that they must discontinue the operation of the colour bar rule at their boxing matches, as its retention will cause a breach of the peace.
§ Mr. EdeThere were 27 police officers outside the Albert Hall but none inside, and there was no demonstration sufficiently serious for the police to intervene. I understand that the trouble arose from a difference of opinion between the crowd and the referee on the merits of the boxers. I have no jurisdiction over the British Boxing Board of Control.
