asked the Under-Secretary of State for Burma how many British battalions and how many Burma Army battalions, respectively, have been employed in offensive operations against dacoits since 1st October, 1946; and for what periods.

The number of battalions employed on offensive operations against dacoits in Burma since 1st October, 1946, is as follows:

  1. (a) British—
    1. 1. during October and November, 1940;
    2. 2. during December, 1946, and January, 1947;
    3. 1. in February, 1947; and
    4. 2 since the beginning of March
  2. (b) Burman—
    1. 1. continuously since November, 1946, and in addition portions of 10 other battalions have been used in various strengths up to two companies at various dates since October, 1946. On an average at any one time portions of at least two battalions have been and are engaged.
