Brigadier Lowasked the Under-Secretary of State for Burma what is the strength of the Burma Army now; what is the target strength to be reached before a new Constitution comes into force; how many infantry battalions of the Burma Army are now in existence; and how many it is hoped to have at the time referred to.
Mr. HendersonThe Burma Army at present contains II battalions, and in addition two battalions of the Burma Regiment. These two battalions are due for disbandment during 1947–48 and the future target strength at present under consideration is one of 11 battalions; but it is not expected that a final decision in regard to this target can be taken until after the elections.
