Mr. Digbyasked the Minister of National Insurance how many men were receiving old age pensions, both contributory and non-contributory, on 30th June, 1946; how many men were receiving an old age pension at the reduced rate, owing to their continuing in employment, on 1st January, 1947; and how many men were receiving full retirement pensions on that date.
§ Mr. SteeleOn 20th June, 1946, there were 1,440,237 contributory and 124,024 non-contributory men old age pensioners. It is estimated that on 1st January, 1947, 250,000 men between ages 65 and 70 were receiving contributory pensions at the basic rate because they had not retired from regular employment. At the same date contributory pensions at the increased rate were in payment to 370,000216W men between ages 65 and 70 who had retired, and to 855,000 men over age 70 to whom the retirement condition does not apply.
