§ 119. Wing-Commander Hulbertasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if it is proposed to increase the pay and allowances of members of the Foreign Service serving in South America to compensate them for the high cost of living in those countries.
Mr. McNeilI would refer the hon. and gallant Member to the reply given on 3rd 211W December last to the hon. Member for Moseley (Sir P. Hannon). New allowances have been granted to Foreign Service officers stationed in the countries in South America and elsewhere already visited by the inspectors, and allowances for other members of the staffs concerned are under discussion with the Treasury. Tours of inspection are continuing, and the allowances of our staffs in each country will be dealt with on similar lines as soon as the inspectors are able to present reports.
§ Mr. Kingasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs the commencing salary and other emoluments of a married member of the diplomatic service serving in Tokyo in his first year.
Mr. McNeilThe salary of a Grade 9 Foreign Service Officer in his first year is, under the new scale, £360 a year. At Tokyo a married officer would receive in addition free board and lodging and a foreign allowance of £200 a year. A deduction of £50 a year would be made for each ration supplied to his wife and children.
