§ 108. Mr. D. Marshallasked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster how many drivers are employed by the Control Commission in Germany, and what is the total cost.
§ Mr. J. HyndThere are 695 British drivers and about 8,800 German drivers employed on Control Commission work. In addition there are 691 British drivers and some 240 German drivers engaged in the transport of officially sponsored visitors to Germany, particularly those sponsored by the Board of Trade. These figures do not include relatively small numbers of driver mechanics who are usually employed only on maintenance. The cost of the British drivers, excluding allowances which are different for married and single men, is some £9,000 per week. The German drivers are employed at no cost to the British Exchequer.

§ Mr. J. HyndThere are about 5,930 women employed of whom 108 are in the women's services. The great majority are employed as clerks, typists, censors, interpreters and mess supervisors, but there is a proportion in higher grades on administrative and executive duties.

§ Mr. J. HyndI assume my hon. Friend is referring to Mr. A. S. Radford, who is head of the instruments and signals section of the electrical and instruments equipment branch of the industry division. So far as I am aware he is paid solely by the Control Office and I know of no connection with any firm. His salary. exclusive of allowances, is £1,720.
