HC Deb 11 March 1947 vol 434 cc175-6W
Sir R. Glyn

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India the number of British civilians now serving with the Central Government in New Delhi and with the Provincial Governments, respectively; and how many have expressed their willingness to transfer their services to the Indian Civil Service or Indian police when their present engagements are terminated.

Mr. A. Henderson

The total number of European officers in the Superior Civil Services in India is approximately 1,600, of whom about 500 are in the I.C.S. and 350 in the Indian Police. It is not possible without undue expenditure of labour to state how they arc distributed between the Central and Provincial Governments. So far as I am aware no invitation has yet been issued to the officers concerned to state whether they are willing to continue to serve under government in India after their present appointments are terminated.

Sir R. Glyn

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India whether he is yet in a position to make a statement as to the position of British civilians now serving with the Government of India; and how far compensation for loss of office and pension rights have been safeguarded, in accordance with the terms of engagement into which they entered with the British Government of India.

Mr. A. Henderson

I am not yet in a position to add anything to my replies to the questions on this subject which I answered orally on 3rd March.
