HC Deb 04 March 1947 vol 434 c44W
Mr. Rees-Williams

asked the Secretary of State for War what steps he will take to remedy the insufficiency of pay and gratuity on demobilisation of the Malay enlisted soldiers of the R.E. and R.A. in Malaya, and the unsatisfactory conditions of their service.

Mr. Bellenger

Malayan soldiers of the Royal Artillery and Royal Engineers have been given similar treatment in the matter of pay and gratuity to that given by the Civil Government to the native volunteer troops for whom they are responsible. I understand that the terms of service of the latter are being reviewed, and I contemplate applying to Malayan soldiers of the Royal Artillery and Royal Engineers any changes that may be approved as a result of the review. The future terms of service for these Malayans are not yet settled.
