HC Deb 02 July 1947 vol 439 c164W
90. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies the immediate cause of the recent disturbances in Ceylon; and what action is being taken to deal with the alleged grievances.

Mr. Creech Jones

The recent strikes in Ceylon arose from a demand by the General Clerical Services Union for what has been described as full trade union rights. The Union were already aware of the Ceylon Ministers' decision that those important issues must lye held over for consideration by the new Ceylon Parliament. The strikes have now come to an end unconditionally, and I understand that no immediate action is being taken by the present Ceylon Government.
