HC Deb 21 January 1947 vol 432 cc12-3W
28. Sir G. Fox

asked the secretary of State for War the number of graves that have been concentrated into El Alamein Cemetery and handed over to the Imperial War Graves Commission; and when it is anticipated that all the mines will be rusted and no longer dangerous, thus enabling the graves still in the minefield to be concentrated at the cemetery.

Mr. Bellenger

The total number of graves concentrated in El Alamein Cemetery and handed over to the Imperial War Graves Commission is 7,181. Expert engineers cannot give an opinion as to when all the mines will be rusted and no longer dangerous. The clearance of the El Alamein minefields is being undertaken by the Egyptian Government. Work is now proceeding and to assist in this we have provided trained personnel and equipment.
