§ 105 and 106. Mr. Bossomasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) what steps he is taking to make the police service as attractive as other 327W Government services to ambitious young men;
(2) to what extent the existing means of recruitment for the police service are attracting recruits from those who have previously had university training.
§ Mr. EdeTaking into account the increases in pay and improvements in conditions of service announced in recent months, and the fact that higher posts are filled by promotion from within the service, it is my view that the police service offers a worth-while career which compares favourably with other forms of public employment open to the same field of candidates. I have no information on the question whether recruits with university training are being accepted over the country as a whole. No such recruits have joined the Metropolitan police force since recruiting was resumed, but it would be misleading to draw any general conclusion from this fact during the present abnormal conditions.
