HC Deb 24 February 1947 vol 433 c250W
Mr. W. Wells

asked the Minister of Education whether he is aware of a shortage of infant teachers; and what steps he is taking to stimulate recruitment.

Mr. Tomlinson

I am aware that the schools need an increased intake of teachers prepared for the teaching of infants. A considerable proportion of the teachers now being trained in both permanent and emergency colleges are being prepared for this work and the attention of the college authorities has recently been drawn to its increasing importance. Proposals of a more long-term nature for expansion of recruitment in this field are also being considered.
