88. Mr. Janner

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power who are the experts being sent by, or on behalf of, his Department to the U.S.A. on the ss. "Queen Elizabeth" to study the subject of district heating; the approximate cost involved; and whether, in view of the fact that this problem is one which vitally affects living conditions in dwelling-houses, any women are to be included in the party.

The composition of the party is as follows:

Dr. W. A. Macfarlane—Director of Fuel Efficiency Branch, Ministry of Fuel and Power.

Mr. S. Pointon-Tavlor—Architect, Ministry of Health. Chairman of the Inter-Departmental Sub-Committee on District Heating.

Mr. A. C. Pallot, M.B.E—Senior Engineer, Ministry of Works. Member of the Inter-Departmental Sub-Committee on District Heating.

Mr. R. S. Eve—Senior Scientific Officer, Building Research Station, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research.

Non-Official Members

Mr. Donald V. H. Smith—Consulting Engineer, and member of the Scottish Regional Fuel Efficiency Committee.

Mr. G. N. Haden—Electrical Engineer, and member of the Egerton Committee on District Heating.

The cost of the visit is estimated at £2,400. The answer to the last part of the question is in the negative, the object of the party being primarily to study the engineering and other technical problems involved.
