HC Deb 13 February 1947 vol 433 c84W
96. Sir J. Lucas

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power to what extent submarines are being used to assist power stations or generating plants; and if full use is being made of those available.

Mr. Shinwell

At my request my noble friend, the First Lord of the Admiralty, has for the past month been employing submarines to generate electricity at the Royal Dockyards at Devonport, Portsmouth, Chatham, Sheerness and Portland. Nineteen submarines are at present in use, and their use combined with other economy measures has, resulted in substantial savings of coal consumption in the Yards and some relief to the main grid supply. I am advised that the fullest practicable use is being made of submarines.
