HC Deb 05 February 1947 vol 432 c364W
97. Mr. Rankin

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he is aware that no rent restrictive legislation is operated in Bermuda; and whether he will take steps to see that such legislation is introduced.

Mr. W. R. Williams

101-2-3. asked (1) what steps he is taking to provide a sufficient number of teachers and adequate school buildings in Bermuda;

(2) by what methods, since there are no examinations, appointments are made to the Civil Service in Bermuda; and whether he is satisfied that suitable candidates from all races are given equal treatment;

(3) whether he is aware that there are separate secondary schools in Bermuda for white and coloured children; and whether he will take steps to ensure that no voluntary body is allowed to conduct schools which operate a colour bar.

Mr. Creech Jones

I have recently received representations on these matters from Bermuda, and I cannot at present add anything to the reply given on 29th January to my hon. Friend the Member for Uxbridge (Mr. Beswick). As there indicated, I hope to make a statement in the near future.
