HC Deb 04 February 1947 vol 432 cc324-5W
102. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Secretary of State for War what percentage of time for the curriculum of Army education plans is devoted to military and regimental history, and what percentage to social history; and to what extent efforts are made to provide the serving soldier with regular opportunities in education that will nourish the sense of civic responsibility.

Mr. Bellenger

It is impossible to give exact percentages as various subjects in the educational syllabus cover aspects of social history. A small amount of instruction, in regimental history is given during primary and corps training. In most units two hours a week are allotted to instruction in current affairs and citizenship. History, including social history, is among the subjects taught under the Army Education Scheme. I hope in the near future to give particulars of our plans for Army education and hon. Members will be able to examine them in detail.
