HC Deb 04 February 1947 vol 432 c306W
Sir A. Herbert

asked the Minister of Labour whether he will amplify and explain Category 4 in the Appendix to the White Paper, Cmd. 7018, entitled, "National Government Service, Local Government Service, N.F.S. and Police, Professional and Personal Services, Entertainment and Sport," showing, in particular, how many Government and local government servants are included in the figure of 3,001,000; what occupations and how many persons are included under entertainment and sport, respectively; how many persons are occupied in the conduct or service of bookmaking businesses, totalisators or football pools; tinder what head the writing or production of books, newspapers, plays, films and music are accounted for; and which of the activities included under professional services, entertainment or sport are used for the purposes of export or for the acquisition of dollars.

Mr. Isaacs

The only available analysis of the figure of 3,001,000 is that given in my reply to a similar question by the hon. Member for Orpington (Sir W. Smithers) on 30th January, a copy of which I am sending to the hon. Member. Statistics are not available in regard to the numbers occupied in the conduct or service of bookmaking businesses, totalisators or football pools. The production of books and newspapers and the printing and publishing of music are included in the industry classification "printing, publishing and bookbinding." The production of plays, films, and music is included under the heading "entertainment." Information in regard to the last part of the question is not available.
