HC Deb 19 December 1947 vol 445 cc432-3W
Sir T. Moore

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he will make a statement regarding the decision of the British Council to send the secretary of the Co-operative Production Federation to lecture for a fortnight in Czechoslovakia on the past and present and future of the Co-operative movement; and why was the expenditure on this visit sanctioned.

Mr. Mayhew

The visit of the Secretary of the Co-operative Production Federation is one of a series arranged by the British Council to show the Czechoslovak people various aspects of British life. Eastern European countries are particularly interested in the co-operative movement of which Britain was the pioneer and the proposed lecture has been welcomed by a number of prominent Czechoslovaks. I approve of any visit that will help to foster good relations between this country and Czechoslovakia.
