HC Deb 15 December 1947 vol 445 c275W
81. Mr. York

asked the Minister of Food whether he has bought all the exportable sugar in the Colonial Empire; what were the total exports of sugar for the last 12 months; how much of this has come to the United Kingdom; and how he has disposed of the remainder.

Mr. Strachey

Yes. During the calendar year 1947 about 1,100,000 tons of Empire sugar was placed at the disposal of the Ministry of Food. Of this about 400,000 tons mainly from the British West Indies, has been shipped to the United Kingdom, and the remainder utilised for distribution in New Zealand, Canada, Far East, Middle East and other areas which the U.K. is responsible for supplying under I.E.F.C. arrangements.
