HC Deb 15 December 1947 vol 445 c281W
103. Mr. D. Jones

asked the Minister of Transport the amount of coal moved coastwise during the last convenient period; and whether he is satisfied that coastal vessels are playing their full part in relieving inland transport in the matter of coal carriage.

Mr. Barnes

Yes. Between 15th October and 15th November, 2,190,700 tons of coal were carried coastwise. This is about 100,000 tons more than in the corresponding period of 1946, 160,000 tons more than the average for the last 12 months and is the greatest amount of coal moved by sea on the United Kingdom coast in any one month during recent years. It reflects great credit upon all concerned, in particular the ships' crews and those responsible for loading and discharging the vessels employed.
