HC Deb 04 December 1947 vol 445 cc85-6W
Mr. House

asked the Minister of Health whether his attention has been directed to the evidence recently given at an inquest at St. Pancras that Henry William Maryon died within three minutes of being given an injection of congo red dye by a medical practitioner; and will he take steps to stop this practice of injecting drugs.

Mr. Bevan

Yes, I have heard of this unhappy case. Accidents due to this cause are extremely rare. The injection of drugs has for years been an essential part of modern therapy, and I am advised that there is no reason to think that its discontinuance would be anything but a disadvantage, in the public interest. Nor is it my proper province to prevent doctors from using their free clinical judgment to the best of their professional ability.
