HC Deb 11 August 1947 vol 441 c222W
Sir W. Darling

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (1) why British officials in Germany have been informed that ex-Army vehicles are to be sold to-Member States of the United Nations for sterling or dollars, as Germany is unable to pay in these currencies and the restoration of the German economy is being hindered by this decision;

(2) if he is aware that thousands of vehicles stand idle in various parks in Germany awaiting disposal; that they have stood for over a year and that they are deteriorating; and, as the release to the German Civil Government of a small proportion of these would make a valuable contribution to rehabilitation, if he will release them.

Mr. Mayhew

Large numbers of vehicles are standing in various vehicle parks in Germany, but many of these have not been declared surplus and are accordingly not available for disposal. As regards vehicles available for disposal, the practice is to sell outside Germany to obtain sterling or other exchange. A limited number of vehicles have been handed over to the German economy, and inquiries are being made into the possibility of making increased numbers available for use in Germany.
