Mr. Sharp

asked the Minister of Works why it is proposed to double the staff employed by the Transport division of his Department; and why the bulk of this increase is for other clerical workers.

The staff of the Transport Division of this Ministry numbered 257 on 1st April, 1947. The estimated requirement for 1947–48 is a staff of 367. The estimated increase of 110 is made up of 47 technical and 63 clerical posts. The additional staff is needed to provide the transport services for a greatly expanded Government building programme for 1947–48, and to improve the arrangements for financial control
