HC Deb 21 April 1947 vol 436 cc59-60W
Mr. Sharp

asked the Minister of Works what additional office space for Government Departments he estimates will be built during the financial year 1947–48, showing separately that of a temporary nature and that which will be provided in London.

Mr. Key

The estimated area of office space to be built for Government Departments during the current financial year is as follows:

Permanent. Temporary. Sq. ft.
Sq. ft. Sq. ft.
London 190,000 428,000
Provinces, Wales and Scotland. 70,000 2,380,000
260,000 2,808,000
Grand Total 3,068,000

In addition, 380,000 square feet of office accommodation is being provided by adapting houses in Regent's Park.

Mr. Sharp

asked the Minister of Works what is the approximate estimate of the additional office space made available in London to Government Departments on the completion of the works included in 1947–48 Civil Estimates, Class VII, Vote 6.

Mr. Key

When all the buildings in London in respect of which provision has been made in the 1947–48 Civil Estimates, Class VII, Vote 6, have been completed, an estimated area of 5 million square feet of office space will have been made available. Several of the building schemes are extensive and will take a number of years to complete.
