HC Deb 03 April 1947 vol 435 c358W
89. Mr. Hogg

asked the Minister of Health whether he is aware of the widespread complaints from Oxford residents it; the vicinity of the Oxford electricity works, protesting against the smoke, fumes and grit from the chimneys of the works; whether he will make a statement; and what steps he proposes to take in consultation with other Ministries.

Mr. Bevan

Yes, Sir, and I am in touch with the Electricity Commissioners and the Minister of Fuel and Power. The trouble is due to over-loading of boilers, lack of the most suitable grades of coal and an insufficiently high chimney. Every effort will be made to see whether any improvements are possible, but it is unlikely that more than limited improvements will be practicable at the present time.
