HC Deb 02 April 1947 vol 435 c306W
68. Mr. C. S. Taylor

asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster how much German subjects have now to pay for the mass-produced people's motor car in Hamburg in German marks; how much this is in £'s sterling at the normal rate of exchange; and how this compares with the price of £160 sterling payable by British subjects serving in Germany.

Mr. J. Hynd

The mass produced people's car, or Volkswagen, is now sold to Germans at a price of RM.5,250. As there is as yet no normal rate of exchange for the German mark, it is not possible to compare this price with the £160 charged to Allied Missions, and British and United States personnel serving in Germany.
