HC Deb 02 April 1947 vol 435 cc306-7W
62. Professor Savory

asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster whether he is aware that General Alexis Zheltov, deputy Soviet commander, presented a demand to the Austrian Minister of the Interior, Herr Oskar Helmer, that eight Communists, whom he named, should be placed in key police positions, including the post of chief of the State police, chief of the alien division and vice-president of the police directorate; and whether, in view of the fact that the Soviet order constitutes unilateral action, he will ask the British representative on the Control Commission to support the refusal of the Minister of the Interior to comply with this order.

Mr. J. Hynd

I am aware that General Zheltov has requested the Austrian Minister of the Interior to make certain changes in the Austrian State Police administration. This matter is in the first place one for the Austrian Government. Should it be brought before the Allied Council in Vienna, the British representative will be instructed to take appropriate action.
