HC Deb 02 April 1947 vol 435 c310W
60. Lieut.-Colonel Bromley-Davenport

asked the Minister of Food what proportion of the total quantity of jute potato bags and of jute cloth for the manufacture of such bags imported into the United Kingdom during the year ended 31st December, 1946, was purchased by him for use by the potato division; what was the amount so expended; and what average cost per ton does this represent of potatoes distributed by that division.

Dr. Summerskill

In the year ended 31st December, 1946, my Department bought approximately one-fifth of the available potato bags at a cost of £360,000 for use by the potato division. No jute cloth was purchased. The cost of bags represents approximately 7s. per ton of the ware and seed potatoes sold last year.
