HC Deb 29 October 1946 vol 428 cc70-1W
77. Miss Herbison

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many students who possessed the requisite qualification for entrance to a technical college, medical school or dental college were refused admission; and what percentage does this represent of those who made application for entrance.

Mr. Westwood

The figures and percentages are as follow:

Number of applications from persons possessing entrance qualifications. Number who were refused admission. Percentage.
Central Institutions:
Colleges other than Domestic Science, Agricultural and Veterinary Colleges 3,474 331 9.5
Domestic Science Colleges 2,358 1,084 46.0
Agricultural and Veterinary Colleges 1,178 777 66.0
Extra-mural medical and dental schools:
Medicine 547 423 77.0
Dentistry 171 81 47.0

These figures do not include personal or late inquiries in cases where applications were not completed because there was no chance of acceptance. I should on the other hand explain that many persons make application for admission to more than one institution, and that many of the applications came from persons resident outwith Scotland.
