HC Deb 29 October 1946 vol 428 c69W
75. Mr. Rankin

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he is aware that, due to the raising of the school-leaving age, Glasgow Corporation requires immediately 150 new classrooms; and what steps he is taking in the matter in view of the fact that, so far, none have been built.

Mr. Westwood

The largest part of the additional accommodation required for the raising of the school-leaving age will be provided in the form of standard huts to be erected by the Ministry of Works. All definite proposals received by the Scottish Education Department from Glasgow Education Authority have been passed to that Ministry for necessary action. I understand that there has been some difficulty in obtaining tenders but a number have now been approved and the joint Under-Secretary discussed the whole position yesterday with representatives of the education authority and the Ministry of Works. All possible steps will be taken to have the work speeded up.
