§ Sir E. Graham-Littleasked the Minister of Agriculture if he will give a list of agricultural colleges in England and Wales subsidised or in any way under the jurisdiction of his Department and under the jurisdiction of A.E.C.s, respectively; upon what principle of selection, and by whom, are the principal and governing bodies of such colleges chosen; and what is the total cost sustained by the Exchequer in the maintenance of these colleges.
§ Mr. T. WilliamsThere are four agricultural colleges in England and Wales not directly associated with a university that are in receipt of grants from my Department, namely, the Royal Agricultural College, Studley College, Seale-Hayne Agricultural College and Harper Adams Agricultural College. There are no agricultural colleges under the jurisdiction of county agricultural executive committees. The Royal Agricultural College and Studley College are companies incorporated under the Companies Acts, and the governing bodies are appointed under the respective articles of association. The governing bodies of Seale-Hayne Agricultural College and Harper Adams Agricultural College constituted in accordance with the foundation schemes. The governing body at each centre includes representative governors appointed by local authorities and other bodies. The principals of the colleges are appointed by the governors. The total Exchequer contribution towards the cost of the agricultural education provided at the colleges was £18,850 for the academic year 1945–46.
