Graham-Littleasked the Minister of Education how many teachers she expects will be available in the national schools on 1st April, 1947; the number of pupils with whom they will have to deal on that date; the figures of teachers and pupils, respectively, at the date of the passage of the Act in tire autumn of 1944; and the present proportion of graduate teachers in secondary schools as compared with the figure 78 per cent. in 1944.
§ Miss Ellen WilkinsonIt is estimated that there will be 188,000 teachers and 5,100,000 pupils in maintained and assisted primary and secondary schools on 1st April, 1947. Comparable figures for the autumn of 1944 are about 170,000 and 5,000,000 respectively. About 42 per cent. of the teachers in all types of 139W secondary schools on 31st March, 1946, were graduates. This percentage is not comparable with the figure of 78 per cent. in 1944 which relates to secondary grammar schools only.
