HC Deb 06 November 1946 vol 428 c285W
Sir W. Smithers

asked the Minister of Transport if he has studied the details of passenger overcrowding and empty holds that have been sent him concerning the recent arrival in Singapore of the s.s. "Empress of Australia"; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Barnes

Yes, Sir, but I am unable to agree that the passenger accommodation was overcrowded. The vessel in question is still serving under trooping conditions and all those who embarked in her were warned of this. As regards the carriage of cargo to Singapore, I would refer the hon. Member to the answer which I gave him on this subject on 30th October, when I explained that shipping had been provided to cover all the cargo available for export to Malaya up to the quantities which could be handled there. As a result of vigorous action in London and on the spot, the port can now handle larger quantities and this is reflected in current shipments.
