HC Deb 05 November 1946 vol 428 c204W
57. Mr. W. Fletcher

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether the figure of 1,000,000 U.S. dollars per month represents the true cost of wastage on currency, or what proportion thereof is recoverable, either by tender back to the U.S.A. of silver purchased or by sale in the open market.

Mr. Dalton

To continue to mint silver would have cost about one million dollars a month. None of this would be recoverable, so long as the coin remains in circulation.
