HC Deb 05 November 1946 vol 428 cc204-5W
64. Brigadier Mackeson

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury what sum of money per head of the population of the United Kingdom between 20 and 60 years of age was expended on maintaining and paying Service personnel, civil servants and local government employees in the first six months of 1938 and 1946, respectively.

Mr. Glenvil Hall

Half-yearly figures and figures for local authority trading services an not available. For the calendar year 1938 the estimated sum is £12 a head or, including the Post Office, £14 a head. The figures for 1946 are not yet known. The corresponding figures for 1945 are £66 per head, or including the Post Office, £68 per head, but the comparison is invalidated by the wartime expansion of Service personnel.
