HC Deb 05 November 1946 vol 428 cc220-1W
101. Mr. Lipson

asked the Secretary of State for War if he has considered the information sent to him by the hon. Member for Cheltenham to the effect that, in addition to an average of 56 hours a week on signals duties, men in 2 squadron, British Corps Signals Regiment, B.A.O.R., are doing an average of 14 hours a week on extraneous duties, making in all an average of 70 hours a week duty, and that, since the announcement of the reforms made by Field-Marshal Montgomery, the number of parades has been increased and new restrictions imposed; and what action he has taken to investigate these complaints with a view to removing the grievances which the men feel.

Mr. Bellenger

In this as in other signal units in B.A.O.R. there are, in addition to the average of 56 hours signal office duties a week, certain other duties that have to be carried out. They include guards and fire picquets and about five hours essential fatigue duties a week. It is proper that a unit should provide guards for its own equipment and stores. A short series of refresher drill parades was held but it ended a month ago. The early morning parade each day will shortly be abolished. I am satisfied that no unnecessary parades or increased restrictions have been introduced in this unit.
