HC Deb 04 November 1946 vol 428 c168W
54. Mr. Peter Freeman

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether, in view of the large increase in the number of live animals selected to be imported into this country in the immediate future, adequate steps are being taken to ensure that no unnecessary cruelty or suffering is permitted on the long sea voyages involved.

Mr. T. Williams

The Animals (Sea Transport) Order of 1930 provides for the protection of ruminating animals and swine carried by sea to this country. Those captive animals which may be outside the scope of this Order are usually brought here under expert supervision, and I am not aware that it is the case that any unnecessary cruelty or suffering is caused to them during the sea passage.
