HC Deb 01 November 1946 vol 428 c164W
Major Beamish

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty to what extent women are being voluntarily recruited to the W.R.N.S.; and how many have volunteered and been accepted since VJ-Day.

Mr. Dugdale

Women are at present being voluntarily recruited for the W.R.N.S to provide an intake of 60 a week. The number enrolled since V.J.-Day is 3,768, representing about 25 per cent. of the number volunteering.

Major Beamish

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty how many women are still in the W.R.N.S.; and by what date the last of them will have been released.

Mr. Dugdale

The numbers of W.R.N.S. officers and ratings borne on 1st October, 1946, were approximately 700 and 11,000 respectively. Those who do not volunteer to serve for specific periods extending beyond that date will be released not later than the end of 1948.
