HC Deb 21 May 1946 vol 423 c72W
Colonel Ropner

asked the Minister of Food the present proportion of the bacon supplies of this country which is supplied by home-grown pigs; whether he is satisfied that this proportion can be maintained in view of the existing cut in feeding-stuffs; and whether he has any particulars as to whether similar cuts in feeding-stuffs are to be made in those countries which export bacon to Great Britain.

Sir B. Smith

Bacon produced from home-grown pigs represented some 31 per cent. of this country's total supplies during January to April, 1946. I regret that some reduction in the supply of bacon from home pigs is likely in view of the recent cut in feedingstuffs. The shortage of feedingstuffs is also seriously affecting supplies of bacon from Denmark, but as far as I am aware there is no such shortage of feedingstuffs for bacon pigs produced by Canada, U.S A and South America.
