HC Deb 15 May 1946 vol 422 cc233-4W
18. Mrs. Middleton

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what mineral concessions have been granted to private companies in Tanganyika during the past year, and how far it is proposed to grant any in the future.

Mr. George Hall:

One mining lease and 324 claims were granted in 1945 in Tanganyika. Mining operations have played an important part in the development of that Territory and I am anxious to promote that development in the future to the greatest possible extent. Suitably qualified persons for licences will be required to agree that arrangements are made to secure for the Territory proper compensation for the removal of natural assets through mining, to prevent the destruction of other natural resources and to ensure adequate labour and welfare conditions.
