HC Deb 15 May 1946 vol 422 cc230-1W
88. Mr. Osborne

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he is aware that fully-fashioned real silk stockings are offered in quantities around 7s. 6d. a pair in Italian shops; and what steps he proposes to take to make some of these available to the women of this country.

Mr. Belcher:

I know of no offers of Italian silk stockings to this country which would enable them to be sold at the price suggested by the hon. Member. For the reasons given in the reply to the hon. and gallant Member for Macclesfield (Air-Commodore Harvey), on the 8th May, I cannot hold out any immediate hope of a substantial increase in the supply of pure silk stockings from any source for the home market.
