HC Deb 15 May 1946 vol 422 cc232-3W
Mr. Peter Freeman

asked the President of the Board of Trade when each of the five new factories sponsored by his Department in Newport will be started; the principal products that will be manufactured; and the number of men, women, boys and girls who will be employed in each.

Mr. Belcher:

Under the powers conferred by Section 1 of the Distribution of Industry Act, 1945, the Board of Trade have undertaken to build and allocate five factories at Newport, details of which are set out below:

Men's wear, mainly uniforms. 1,000, mainly women. Aug., 1946
Electric water-heating equipment. 40 men and 90 women. June, 1946.
Prefabricated woodwork 500, mainly men.
Women's and children's heavy clothing. 30 men and 70 women.
Sheet metal 150 men and 150 women.

As final arrangements have not yet been completed it has not yet been found possible to fix a starting date for the building of the last three factories listed above, but it is hoped to make a start late in the year.

The first of the above factories is to be 35,000 sq. ft. instead of 50,000 sq. ft. as stated in the OFFICIAL REPORT for the 1st May.
