HC Deb 15 May 1946 vol 422 c227W
Mr. York

asked the Minister of Food whether the Food Control Board has been informed of the total maize yield in Argentina of the 1945 harvest; how much of the crop was available for export; and what proportion of the supplies available for export were imported into this country.

Sir B. Smith:

The Argentine Government have officially announced that the total yield from the maize crop harvested about April, 1945, was approximately 2,925,000 tons. No official statement of quantities available for export or of actual exports of maize from Argentina during the year, April, 1945-March, 1946, has been issued, but I understand that trade estimates of exports range from 755,000 tons to 793,000 tons. Shipments of maize from Argentina to the United Kingdom during the year April, 1945-March, 1946, were 251,590 tons.
