132. Lieut.-Colonel Clifton-Brownasked the Minister of Labour why particulars of the conditions of service and vacancies for personnel for Car Unit employment with the Control Service in Germany and Austria, as given in the War Office Welfare Memorandum No. 43, for March, was not available in Resettlement bureaux up to 3rd May; and what is the procedure for ensuring that local Resettlement bureaux get early information regarding likely employment vacancies.
191W
§ Mr. Ness Edwards:Information regarding these posts was made available to the Forces through the Service Departments, and hitherto the recruitment position has been such that further publicity was not considered necessary. Arrangements were, however, made by our Department that any inquirer seeking information at a Resettlement advice office with regard to the vacancies should be advised to apply to the Control Office for Germany and Austria, either through his commanding officer, if still in the Forces, or otherwise directly. With regard to the second part of the Question, the purpose of the Resettlement advice offices is to give general information and advice, and normally these offices do not have detailed information about specific vacancies, such information being available at the Employment Exchanges and appointments offices of our Department. Where, however, vacancies which are notified to our Department are of a special character and might be of particular interest to ex-Service and other persons resettling after war service, the information is made available to Resettlement advice offices with all possible speed.
