HC Deb 13 May 1946 vol 422 c155W
Sir W. Smiles

asked the Minister of Food if he is aware that, owing to imports of foreign lettuce into Northern Ireland, local market gardeners cannot find a market for home grown lettuce; and if he is now in a position to divert foreign lettuce to feed the starving people of Europe and leave the market in Northern Ireland to the home grown lettuce.

Sir B. Smith:

According to my information, the quality of much of the home grown lettuce in Northern Ireland makes it difficult to market. The attention of the Irish Wholesale Fruit Merchants Association has, however, been drawn to the fact that local growers are having difficulty in disposing of their crop.
