Mr. Lipson

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the total amount of the loans due for repayment between 1946–1951 and between 1952–1959, inclusive.

Mr. Dalton:

The total amounts of internal British Government debt—other than floating debt, small savings and other securities repayable on demand or at short notice, and debt which is only optionally redeemable—which are finally repayable, other than by annual instalments, by dates falling within the periods mentioned are: 1st May, 1946—31st December, 1951, £2,154 million. 1st January, 1952—31st December, 1959, £2,784 million.

In addition, the following total amounts will be payable in the two periods in respect of loans redeemable by annual drawings, annuities, etc.: 1946—1951, £303 million. 1952—1959, £417 million.
